Loren Borud, M.D. was known for his achievements in the medical world especially in the field of plastic surgery. He has authored several publications and his own book about his experiences about being a plastic surgeon. But what most people did not know is that he is also a pioneer in the medical development and research of lymphedema and its treatment.
Lymphedema or what most people know as Elephantiasis is also known as lymphatic obstruction, where there is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. Loren Borud, MD., co-founded the Harvard Lymphedema Clinic in 2004 with Dr. Håkan Brorson, a plastic surgeon from the Swedish Malmö University Hospital, so that they can study lymphedema closely and at the same time provide treatment for patients with this disease. Patients have symptoms like fatigue, collection of fluid around the head or neck, discoloration of the skin over lymphedema, swollen limb, and sometimes extreme deformities.
Loren Borud, M.D. and his colleagues conducted a 4-year study and review of their first 100 patients at the Lymphedema Clinic, and they wrote a medical journal developing an algorithm on how to diagnose and treat patients with this disease. They had done this while holding conferences and discourses so that they can have better insights regarding this disease.
